The Growing Security Industry

Singapore is one of the safest cities the world. With its Police Force ranked third in the world and first in Asia (WEF's Global Competitiveness Report 2012-2013), it is said to be a ‘thought leader for safety and security in the Asia Pacific region’ (EDB Singapore).

Between 2010 to 2012, the Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA) has put in S$2.7million into training programmes, with emphasis on specialisation and upgrading of skills for new and existing security officers. As urbanisation in Singapore continues to grow, demand for the security industry in Singapore will only get bigger, with a greater need for skilled security personnel in high-security places.

EDB Singapore has partnered up with Singapore Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to form the Safety and Security Industry Programme Office (SSIPO) to promote and co-develop solutions for the industry. The SSIPO launched the Safe City pilot programme which aims to increase security situational awareness and enhance the response time of city authorities to public safety incidents starting with advancing video monitoring systems. International focus has also been drawn to the Singapore security industry, with plans from INTERPOL to set up a Global Complex for innovation. This research and development facility will begin its operations in 2014. The global complex department in Singapore will be one of three in the world and the only one in Asia.

These new initiatives illustrate the importance of the security industry in Singapore and the influence of the security industry on the rest of Asia.
